Basques

Artist: Gloria Totoricagüena

Artist Statement:

For the Basque section of the garage tile work you are doing, this document has samples of 4 different symbols that any Basque person will recognize. What an amazing and significant project you have created! This is how I see the overall section looking:

The background symbol is the Lauburu,  literally translated as four heads, which is found on ancient stone and wood carvings of all kinds, on ship hulls and cemetery headstones, Church foyers and then in modernity embroidered on linens, all types of furniture, jewelry etc. etc..  This could be background tiles with the other three symbols larger and superimposed on top of the Lauburus. The Lauburus can all be the same color of the blues shown here in the larger Lauburu.

The sunflower, Eguzkilore,  protects us from evils spirits, as those evil spirits get caught in the sunflower thorns and cannot pass through. Most of us have one on the front door, or near the front door, or inside the house. The colors would include these browns and golds.

The Ikurriña is the cultural Basque flag, used by Basque governmental entities, cultural institutions and cultural events.  Every Basque person from around the world also knows this symbol. This should be the middle symbol.  The red is blood red, not orange red.

The Tree of Gernika, represents the Tree in the town of Gernika ( my parents’ birthplace made famous by Picasso after the bombing in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War). The green could be the same Kelly green of the middle symbol flag, the words “Gernika-Lumo” deleted/removed, and the building behind the tree and the tree trunk in the same golds and browns as the sunflower.
