Artist statement:

My cultural heritage is important to me because it helps us to remember our cultural diversity. When we take the time to learn about or experience cultural heritage it develops mutual respect and creates conversations among different cultures. I’m thankful for Watsonville because it holds onto its identity even though the cities and towns around it have been watered down. Whether its getting a flat of strawberries on a corner, fresh tamales or freshly grown sunflowers you know the food is made or harvested with care and love. In a sense, being a public artist isn’t new to me. I’ve been a performing ballerina for 10 years. But, having this medium to express my creativity is new and a little bit scary as there’s permanence to this piece unlike a ballet. I’m excited to visit in the future and show this installation to my grandparents when they visit.
