Ireland & Mexico (Michoacan)
Artist: Matthew Enright (Ireland) & Leslie Gonzalez, Mexico (Michoacan)
Artist Statement:
Being a public artist gives me the opportunity to share and reflect on what Watsonville represents through art. Being a public artist allows me to add meaning to the town and help others to become inspired. Through art, cities can become unique and add life to buildings or open areas. It brings life to dull and blank buildings or the environment around the town. It allows the town to become more welcoming to all. Being a public artist allows me to contribute to making everything a little more full of life. Furthermore, it allows me to show off my work to the community and inspire others to do what they love and be proud of themself. Lastly, participating and being a public artist can inspire others to become connected in the community and bring the town together in pieces of art. When I think of Watsonville I picture a town full of diversity and a large open family. We care for one another and work together during hard times. Watsonville is my home full of activities and events. Watsonville brings people together. I see Watsonville as a growing town that has very high potential.
-Matthew Enright
To me my culture/heritage is really important to me because my family has always taught me to be proud of my culture. Even though I was not raised in Mexico and live here in the United States I’ve visited Mexico a lot from a young age so I still got to experience how beautiful the traditions are in Mexico. My parents have always done a good job at not letting me and my siblings forget about our roots. I think that Watsonville is a really cool place because many people from different cultures live here. Since the majority of the people that live here are Mexican I think that it is really cool how the older generations still find a way to bring the culture here so that the future generations don’t forget about their roots. I am really grateful that my art was chosen to be displayed at the public library and really excited to see how my mosaic turns out.
