Jordan & Syria
Artist: Maha Taitano (Jordan) & Kerry Gil (Syria)
Maha’s Statement:
These works shown by Maha are her response to two subjects, dismantling Islamophobia and the ontology of being biracial in America. Maha has experienced hostility and fear when individuals learn of her Arab ethnicity, this is a conditioned systematic racist response fabricated by our media and politics here in America. There are many elements that have been adopted and used that come from the Levant region (Middle East) that America uses today. Maha intentionally uses Islamic geometry and alphabet in a inviting and youthful/playful context to help defuse peoples institutional responses to her culture and personhood. This helps remind people that being Arab is layered.
