Maha Taitano
Maha Taitano is a sculpture & installation artist working across mediums from metals, wood, fabrics, and papers to plastics. After attending Laney College, Oakland, in 2004, she transferred to UC Santa Cruz in 2007, where she earned a BA in Visual Arts. She is currently attending Vermont College of the Fine Arts for her MFA in Visual Arts.
Maha’s work focuses on the subject of identities & the many-layered aspects & positionalities of intersectional modern culture. Currently, she is practicing decolonizing her education as a female Pacific Islander & Arab artist living in Santa Cruz, CA. Pre-colonized, pre-modern religion, & indigenous matriarchal epistemologies from her multiple cultures, are guides for her subject matter & practice. The process & practice of creating & craft is of paramount importance to Maha, this value seen in her work through two aspects; multiples & repetition, and building & living in community.
Maha was the designer for our side project on Santa Cruz: “Dancing Waters.” She has also been the Studio manager for our temporary satellite studio in Santa Cuz and Capitola.
