Mexico & Philippines

Artists: Monica Galvan (Mexico) & Eva Monroe (Philippines)

Eva’s Statement:

The hand belongs to a Filipino field worker holding an “Ilaw,” or light, representing hope and light in the darkness. I danced traditional Filipino dances as a young girl in Watsonville for Community performances. The Ilaw-Ilaw was one of the dances, balancing a lighted votive on my palm. The rows of color represent the fields that the Filipino Manongs worked to bring food to the table worldwide, including their own.
